Quarry Trails Development

A community focused on adventure

The Quarry Trails mixed-use development is defined by its surroundings, on the site of the largest contiguous quarry in the United States and now home to a Metro Park.

Marking the southern gateway to the new Quarry Trails Metro Park, the community center, retail, and residential buildings are part of a burgeoning community focused on adventure and the quarry’s natural features. The homes and amenities occupy 80 acres within the 607-acre park, which was developed on a former working quarry and required brownfield remediation.

The community center is the gateway building to the development, establishing the community’s identity upon arrival. Built into the side of a hill, the project required innovative engineering solutions to anchor the building msecurely and link it with site paths and trails. Despite a small footprint, the Clubhouse needed to support a wide range of community programs and remain adaptable to future needs. Spaces were designed for multifunctional use, accommodating daily activities and special events.

The unique design was inspired by the Scandinavian idea of “hygge” — shaping a cozy and comfortable place in the wild landscape — and the site’s natural surroundings, incorporating stone, wood, and recognizable residential forms.

The mass of the 155-unit residential building is broken down by a series of gables to form a smaller sense of community within the building itself. It includes a resident’s lounge space with an outdoor patio featuring a grill and fireplace, an observation platform overlooking the quarry development to the north, and a custom storage shelter for residents’ bikes, kayaks, and other adventure equipment.

The 16,000 SF retail building helps support the residents with lounge spaces, The Athletic, and the client’s coffee-to-cocktail concept Bada Bean Bada Booze.
