199 S. FIFTH STREET
This project started with a vacant office building from the 1970s on the fringe of downtown. The challenge to the architect was simple: to convert this Brutalist office building into contemporary luxury residences. Urban living was a pivotal idea and in keeping with that we introduced private outdoor spaces to all residents in addition to a common area on the roof deck. The cantilevered balconies extended from the building facade which allowed the units to expand beyond the confines of the shell. The overall effect of the building was total transformation. From the bronze curtain wall office building that was internal in nature, produced a collection of residences that had clear glass and balconies opening up the building to it’s neighbors. The strength of this adaptive reuse project was in its integration of the existing conditions with new elements and contributing to the revitalization effort for downtown Columbus.
