Penzone Base One

Reimagining a flagship salon for the future

The transformation from Charles Penzone’s original flagship salon to Base One, a modern 10,000 SF multi-functional space features a dramatic two-story entry and prominent triangular mezzanine windows, which inspired the new Base One identity and bridged the building’s past with its present.

The  salon’s original interior was dated, and the space plan needed updating to house the new concept, making our mission clear: open up the labyrinthine layout and infuse it with modern energy while keeping the building’s structure intact.

The entry now welcomes visitors with a dramatic two-story space, setting the tone for the entire experience. We stripped away walls to create flow, turning the triangular mezzanine windows into a focal point that bridges past and present and providing the inspiration behind the Base One identity.

Color and acoustics played crucial roles in our design strategy. Crisp white walls serve as a canvas, punctuated by natural woods and bold black accents. This neutral backdrop allows the founder’s vibrant artwork and a show-stopping mural hallway to guide guests from the entry lounge to the event space and patio. To tackle the acoustic challenges in the spacious main area, we implemented sound-absorbing elements, from plush furnishings to specially designed lighting fixtures, creating a space that feels both grand and intimate.

The kitchenette at Penzone Base One has white countertops and wood cabinets with white counter height modern chairs. The wall behind the counter has white chevron patterned tiles and wood floating shelves with cups and decor. Also in the kitchenette are coffee machines and a refrigerator for drinks and light snacks. Two women are at the counter laughing and having drinks; they both are wearing black tops, with the blonde one wearing jeans and the dark-haired woman wearing a cream-colored bodycon skirt. The walls around the area are black, and the area is framed in Penzone's branding, along with colorful murals and paintings.

Our “reuse and infuse” philosophy guided every decision, allowing us to push boundaries while building on an established client relationship. Base One integrates areas for employee training, co-working, events, wellness, and creativity. New employees begin their journey in a space that embodies the brand’s ethos, while community members can rent anything from a podcast studio to a yoga room complete with aerial swings. This project wasn’t just about redesigning a building; we crafted an experience that nurtures and inspires the community.

As we step back and admire the transformation, it’s clear that the most sustainable and impactful design doesn’t always start from scratch. By honoring the past, embracing the present, and looking to the future, Base One demonstrates the power of thoughtful, adaptive reuse.
