Graduate Hotels are known for their boutique, retro appeal and the way they uniquely celebrate the university communities they’re in. The Short North location is no different. This project involved turning an existing 11-story building with 100 apartments into a 171-room hotel with restaurant and retail space on the bottom level.

Designing an exterior to fit within the streetscape and neighborhood was crucial. The sides of the building feature two augmented reality murals that celebrate local immigrants in the Columbus, Ohio, community. The incorporation of the murals resulted in an AIA Merit Award, and they are currently the world’s largest AR mural experience.

Working hand in hand with the Italian Village Commission, we ensured the building would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

The design had to complement its historic surroundings and offer a contemporary boutique hotel experience. The exterior is a composition of modern styles and a nod to its local context through the combination of materials that draw the passerby in, including metal panels and brick with intentional detailing. The Graduate Columbus is a reflection of a vibrant and well-loved neighborhood.
