Quarry Trails Development

Where adventure meets home

The Quarry Trails development transforms a former industrial site into a mixed-use community where residents and visitors can live, work out, grab coffee, and explore one of Central Ohio’s most unique landscapes.

Built on the site of the largest contiguous quarry in the United States, this 607-acre development required brownfield remediation before becoming the vibrant community it is today. The three buildings we designed—a 155-unit apartment building, retail buildings, and a community center—serve as the southern gateway to the 607-acre  Quarry Trails Metro Park, creating a community focused on adventure and the quarry’s natural features.

The community center is the gateway building to the development, establishing the community’s identity upon arrival. Built into the side of a hill, this project required innovative engineering solutions to anchor it securely while connecting to the site’s network of paths and trails. The community center features multifunctional spaces, including a lounge, media room, and game room, that can adapt from daily hangouts to special events.

South Bank Apartments draws inspiration from Scandinavian “hygge” — shaping a cozy and comfortable place in the wild landscape. The massing of the 40,000 SF is broken down using a series of gables that create smaller communities within the larger structure and make it easy to identify different unit types from the outside. The building includes an Instagram-worthy observation deck overlooking the quarry, plus adventure-oriented storage for residents’ bikes and kayaks. Inside, the outdoor theme was carreid through with moss art pieces, topographic elements, and natural-toned finishes that blur the line between interior and exterior living.

The retail building houses everything the community needs in one efficient package: The Athletic fitness center, the leasing office, and the client’s Bada Bean Bada Booze coffee-to-cocktail concept. The challenging site grading meant one side sits two feet lower than the other, so ramps and stairs connect everything seamlessly. Glass block walls and back-lit signage create interesting interior features, while the fitness space opens directly onto a yoga patio through garage doors. The building’s flat roof and careful massing ensure the apartment residents across the street maintain their quarry views.
