Located in the heart of Westerville, Highlands Park Family Aquatic Center is a complete demolition and construction of a new outdoor aquatic complex.

Stemming from the master plan, the aquatic center, sitting adjacent to protected wetlands, active soccer fields and within a residential neighborhood is designed around sustainable principles. The amenities include an eight lane competitive lap pool with diving well, large leisure pool, a toddler pool with zero entry with small fountains, two 30' water slides, a lazy river, and large and small spray grounds. With over 625,000 gallons of water, it is one of the larger aquatic complexes in the area.

The project's sustainable design incorporates green roofs, bioswales, rain water management and rain gardens, pervious concrete parking areas, water retention areas, low flow plumbing fixtures, motion controlled LED lighting, recycled building materials and fast growing/ recycled finishes.

The building is designed to take advantage of the open pastoral site with a backdrop of thick mature trees. The open, spacious interior, dominant features of the exterior facade, and main entry area enhance the welcoming nature of the center. This allows the excitement internally to serve as the best marketing of all, the activity of the people. The rear facades exterior features of site interaction, social spaces, and elevated roof terrace soften the line between interior and exterior to create an ideal hospitality environment.

    City of Columbus Acquatics Centers

As part of a multi-phased improvement strategy by the City of Columbus, the development of a new prototype pool building included community interaction and neighborhood focus groups was a significant part of the design phase. The resulting building concept combines a welcoming openness with a sense of strength, and durability with a vibrant materiality and attention to detail.

The building uses a series of air flow patterns and clerestory and sky lit openings to naturally ventilate and allow ample visibility and lighting without extensive use of mechanical systems. Security and staffing concerns are addressed by the buildings configuration, with a centrally located and slightly elevated observation point with views to all parts of the site and building.

Interior finishes provide rugged durability with a refined crafted installation. A planked open slat ceiling system provides an inexpensive method of cloaking building utilities and roof trusses while providing a finish surface that, through wood grain and color, offers a warm contrast to the masonry, metal and concrete finishes below.

A large sliding wall panel at the main entry creates visual enticement to the new pool and pool features beyond when the facility is open. In the evenings and the off season, the wall panel neatly encloses the facility with simplicity and without conveying a message of exclusion. The sliding wall panel, elevated managers office, and other key locations throughout the building all provide splashes of color that uniquely distinguish each of the three neighborhoods from the others.

    Livingston Park, Columbus, OH

    2013 AIA Columbus Merit Award

This project is part of a multi-phase, master-planned park re-development at the entry area of Nationwide Children's Hospital on Columbus Southeast side. Operated by Columbus Recreation & Parks, the 9.32 acre Livingston Park offers play areas, stroll gardens, an amphitheater, sports courts, water-play areas, historic interpretive panels, and an iconic trellis structure.

Reminiscent of the rail platform canopies that used to exist throughout the city, the trellis structure is the central feature of the park. With a combination of translucent resin panels and composite wood slats at different spacing intervals, the trellis canopy mediates sunlight relative to the respective functions that occur below.

Beneath the east end of the canopy are a series of interpretive wall panels which tell the history of the neighborhood. Super-graphics on the exterior of the wall panels are intended to be seen from the parks perimeter, while more detailed images and text are imprinted on the interior sides. The walls are internally illuminated to create a nocturnal beacon at the center of the park.

The City of Grandview Heights decided to update their exiting park shelter building and set out to renovate their existing shelter, add a new playground, landscaping and parking lot and provide storm water management. Aquatic Adventures

Located in a suburb of Columbus, this 28,500 sf natatorium complex accommodates competitive and recreational swimming including scuba diving certification programs. The facility included a full service dive shop, swim-related retail area, travel agency and corporate offices for the owners management company. The building, sited adjacent to a major interstate highway, appropriately attracted attention and effectively promoted the facility's aquatic-related functions.

The exterior featured galvanized corrugated metal siding, stucco, synthetic stone cladding and aluminum storefront and entry systems. The rooflines were curved to simulate waves. Exterior sunscreens and canopies helped reduce interior heat gain and glare.

From the exterior's 'Diver Down' red-glazed windows, to the facility's sophisticated environmental control systems, the project successfully merged the technical requirements of a dive instruction facility with the contagious vitality of a typical Dive and Swim Shop.

    Premier at Sawmill

The project involved the comprehensive renovation of an existing 50,000 SF fitness center in a suburb of Columbus. The existing facility has been completely transformed from modifications to the exterior entry canopy to substantial renovations on all floor levels.

The state-of-the-art renovation included the following amenities: cardio, strength training, spinning, pilates, racquetball, aquatics, spa services, cafe and a children's area. A new elevator was added to provide accessibility to all levels of the club. To provide maximum visibility within the club, all railings were designed with full glass panels.

The project succeeded in fully transforming the previously dated interiors into a vibrant and energetic environment that is operationally superior and also attractive to existing and prospective members. However, the most important aspect was the achievement of the owner's vision in giving Premier Athletic Club a new image as a frontrunner in the arena of modern athletic club design.

    Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club

The Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club was modeled after the classic, turn-of-the-century American golf clubs. It's design used elements and materials typical of East Coast architecture: stone walls, lap siding, prominent trim detailing, dormers and porches; all with attention to proportion and scale. In its elegance, the clubhouse is comfortable and welcoming, and remains consistent with the traditional character of its surroundings.

Kinsale's slate of amenities included a full-service grille, a pro shop, full locker and spa facilities, a conference center, massage services, a child-care facility, fitness and aerobics rooms, a pilates area, computer golf simulation systems, outdoor pools and spas, and tournament-level tennis courts.

The challenge was to create a facility encompassing more than 30,000 square feet while maintaining the comforts and feel of home. This challenge was met in all aspects of the design; as evidenced by the club and golf course's selection in 2004 by Golf Digest as one of Americas best.
